Although later fighters such as the TIE Advanced and TIE Defender also filled this role, the Gunboat was an earlier attempt at taking the rebels on at their own game, and in many ways is a better all round fighter than its replacements. The Gunboat was evolved from the Lambda Shuttle design, although its five wings do not swivel for landing like the Lambda, and the design was eventually retired to make way for TIE variants which matched the Imperial design ethos better than this fighter. The Gunboat was sold to some non-Imperial concerns, although these were always allied closely with the Empire, and has been found in limited numbers on the open market where this heavy fighter is always snatched up for its high speeds, manueverability and heavy weapons.

Although slower than the Gunboat, its heavier armour serves it well in combat, and the reduced energy weapon load is easily countered by its huge racks of missile launchers which can even manage to smash capital ships if so required. The Missile Boat was originally introduced to help deal with the threat of TIE Defenders produced by the rogue Imperial Admiral, Zaarin, and advanced targetting computers are mounted within the vessel to help counter the manueverability of those fighters. Missile boats are however, extremely expensive to produce and the Empire abandoned this design so they could focus on producing TIE Bombers which could fulfil a similar role at a far lower price.

The Crossbow is one such variant, a Starwing with improved atmospheric performance and all round improved manueverability, but also designed to have a heavier load of Ion Weaponry. To achieve this the Ion and Laser weapons have been swapped, allowing the three chin Ion cannons to carry a heavier punch than the twin wing mounted laser cannons, although the concussion missile launchers and magazines have been left in place. A rollbar has been added to enhance the fighters performance, although in most other ways the fighter is the same as its older brother allowing parts to be easily swapped between them and the newer design to operate without new supplies being shipped out alongside the new fighters. The Crossbow was produced in small numbers and only issued to a few squadrons, its success rate not meriting the introduction of a new type of starfighter and not meriting the training of pilots that such a roll out would require.

Although very expensive, the well rounded assault armament on this vessel led to Empire buying them in large numbers. The Escort Shuttle is used for carrying high ranking officers, and acting as a support craft on assault missions, using its capability of carrying 24 fully armed troops to aid more vulnerable Sentinel and Lamdda shuttles. The Escort Shuttle while not as manueverable as a starfighter, has better ranged weaponry, letting it engage fighters before they can close within their weapon range, making this vessel worth every credit to the Empire.
