The Vector's a design dates from around the same time as the Rendilli Dreadnaught, and was made for the same purpose. Despite proven claims that the design could withstand meteor impacts, the higher weight and cost of the vessel made it unfavorable in the eyes of the Republic. However, there were still quite a number of them constructed in hopes that someone would purchase them. Pirates and some border-worlds did acquire a few of these vessels, hoping their stronger armor plating would allow them to take more of a punishment than the Rendilli design. With the dawning of the Empire, however, most of those vessels were sold to salvage yards and melted down to make plating for the Imperators.
The vessel’s biggest advantage, as well as its worst disadvantage, happens to be the fact that it’s weaponry is retractable. Durasteel doors close over the ports when the weapons are not in use to save them from the usual wear and tear of space travel. Further more, Imperial and New Republic commanders often miss the fact that only the displayed turrets are firing when the ship is making a retreat. However, these doors also prevents the ship from firing back right away should she be jumped, which has caused moderate damage to the ship’s heavier-than-standard armor.
Another quirk of the now-lost design is the lack of hangars and landing platforms. A number of docking ports located strategically about the vessel are the only methods of ingress or egress about the ship. While many of these ports and collars can support cargo, the loading time for goods is increased by a fair amount.
The Vector herself was actually a ship found in a scrap yard by the Osai Syndicate, a crime organization with ties to many of the mass-media entertainment venues. They pulled out her weapon systems and made other essentail upgrades to her systems. Originally crewed at around fifteen thousand persons, droid crews and automation has brought it down to a feasible crew of 120 persons. The shock troop capacity was increased from a mere thousand to two and one-half thousand persons, to allow for raiding. Ion weapons also replaced the primary turbolaser batteries to allow for easier capture. The current captain's favourite tactic is to disable enemy vessels and board by extending the docking tubes along the flanks of the Vector.
