A new prototype model from Blastech, the plans for the Blaster Shotgun were quickly stolen and copied by the rogue weapons company ZLS, though the weapon itself is not yet in mass production. The DL-88 (redubbed the 8026 by ZLS founder Zolar) is a new form of weapon, designed with personal defense and police forces in mind. It combines the mentality behind the DL-44 (heavy power power packed into a small package) with the power of a heavy blaster rifle and the size of a carbine, resulting in a massively powerful firearm with the drawbacks of a miniscule ammo capacity and unenviable range. The DL-88 achieves its effect by drawing off the entire blaster pack, totally draining it to give the blast maximum punch. To mitigate the obvious resulting ammo problems, the gun double-loads blaster packs, with a pump-action barrel that ejects the spent pack and puts the new one in place. The crystal is a special design to try and hold the beam together for as long as possible, but is quite inefficient due to the sheer power which must be contained. As it gets farther from its starting point, the beam diffuses and causes less total damage to its targets. This results in a horrificly limited range which renders the gun useless in anything but indoor or very close range battles. However, for close-quarters combat where the first few shots make the difference, the blaster "shotgun" is the weapon of choice.
