While at Starfleet Academy, Deel caught the eye of a human male of Norwegian heritage named Erik Longstead. The two males started up a relationship which finally led to their union on the same day their graduated from the academy. Due to Deel's high scores, he was able to pull some strings and had Erik stationed to the USS Milwaukee along with him. When the USS Milwaukee took damage during a Tholian ambush in 2269 and went into spacedock for repairs, Deel and Erik got transferred to the USS Enterprise for a short time. Eventually Deel was given command of the USS Alexander Madison while Erik retired after lossing his right forearm on an away mission. Erik got a replacement for his lost arm, and stayed by M'Shoraa's side aboard the Alexander Madison.
