Malfunction
A Clone Wars fan fiction
Gainir IV, In the Outer Rim:
Three days after the first Battle of Coruscant:
Clone Commander Kemil marched ahead of the troop convoy alongside his ‘General’, a beautiful young vixen of the Jedi Order. Her fellow Jedi referred to her as Master Ailn Faya. General Faya and the 618th Tactical Strike Legion were assigned to this swampy mud hole of a planet when it was deemed to be of strategic importance. The Confederacy of Independent Systems had set up a massive droid foundry planet side, and the 618th was ordered to infiltrate the facility and knock out the shield generator, allowing the Republic’s 5th Fleet to reduce the entire area to slag.
The swamp’s electromagnetic fields were interfering with the speeders’ repulsorlifts and forced the unit to make their way on foot. Faya’s once beautiful tail was now drooping and covered in mud or whatever it was they were marching through.
“What the bloody frag are we doing on this murglak of a mission?” Thought Faya as she continued to trudge through the bog. “Only an hour ago I was enjoying a nice cup of stimcaf in my quarters aboard the Peregrine… and now this.”
“Keep an eye out for droids…” Cautioned the young Jedi
“I doubt any of them would be able to make it through this stuff… it‘s like wet concrete.” Returned Kemil
“I know… and it smells like sewage.” Stated Faya with a sick look on her face.
One of the clones doesn’t notice a tripwire hidden just below the surface of the muck and sets off a series of explosives. The chain reaction of blasts sends the surviving members of the team flying and landing in the mess. Master Faya picks herself up out of the slime and wipes most of the goop from her face.
“Oh kark… move it people! The swamps on fire!” Yells the Jedi as she helps up Commander Kemil “Move it! Move it! Move it!”
The entire area is ablaze now as the troops reach the edge of the swamp.
“How many we lost Commander?” Inquisits Ailn Faya as she looks into the fire.
“Only two General Faya.” Reports Commander Kemil.
“We’re going to loss many more before this mission is over.” Thought the General with sadness. “Move it out troops. By now the Seppies’ must know we’re coming.”
“You heard her men! On the bounce!” Ordered Kemil.
The squadron is two klicks away from the factory by sundown. Over the horizon comes a Geonosian scouting parts. The flying insect-like warriors are carrying their standard sonic blasters. The lead scout takes notice of the hiding troops and the Geonosians swoop in with their blasters firing.
“Open fire!” Barked Kemil as he raised his DC-15 and took aim. “Steady old man, steady…”
Commander Kemil squeezes the trigger of his weapon and drops the nearest of the winged pests. Two more of the nasty creatures fall during mid-flight. The lead scout pulls out a Verpine Shatter Gun and fires at Kemil. The solid projectile impacts with the clone’s helmet, fracturing the view screen.
“Helmet’s no good now. Can’t see a thing through it…” Pondered Kemil as he wiped off his helmet and threw it to the ground. Blood runs down his face from a gash in his forehead. “You’re dead…”
The injured commander takes aim and pulls the trigger. The last of the scouting party drops to the ground, a blaster burn through its face.
“Are you alright Kemil?” Questions Faya with a worried tone of voice.
“Blood’s getting in my eyes ma’am…” Replies the commander.
Ailn Faya rips off part of her robe. With mother like care, she removes the blood from his face, and then wraps the torn cloth around Kemil’s forehead, applying pressure to the wound.
“You good to fight?” Asked Faya.
“I think so General. By the way, thanks.” Returned Kemil with a smile.
“Good. On your feet. We keep going.” Replied Faya as one of the clones picks up a sonic blaster.
The foundry is within sight now. As the next patrol exit’s the hive like structure, the Republic troops slip in. They spread out looking for the generator in groups of two. Kemil and Faya have teamed up and head for the lowest level of the facility, while the other groups look elsewhere. Blaster fire and yelling can be heard as four of the groups are taken out by enemy fire. Two surviving troops make their way the last known location of their commanding officers, unaware they are being followed.
“Sir, we’re all that’s left… we… walked into an ambush.” Stammered Clone 11/3902. “We tried to--AAAGGHHH!”
The familiar sound of a sonic weapon fills the corridor as the two injured clones fall to the ground. Faya raises her lightsaber to deflect an incoming sonic blast, but is knocked back when her blade intensified the sonic wave. Her right arm breaks in three locations on impact with the cave like wave. An anguished yelp of pain escapes the vixen’s mouth as she bears her teeth. She recoils in pain as she tries to regain her footing. She feels a hand grab hold of her other arm and tries to fight whoever it was that grabbed her.
“It’s alright General… it’s me.” Acknowledged Kemil as he pulled the thermal detonator from his belt with his other hand and throw it at the approaching droids and Geonosian sentries. Kemil dragged Faya down the tunnel as the roof caved in.
Faya blacks out from the pain. Kemil straps her to his back at runs down the corridor until they reach the shield generator. With the passed out Jedi still on his back, he places the explosives of the generator and sets the delay for three minutes. Kemil and Faya make it to the factory hanger bay with a minute to spare. The clone commander places Faya in the co-pilots seat of a Nemodian shuttle which he commandeered. The shuttle speeds away as the generator explodes and the Republic fleet rains down a fiery doom upon the factory. The shuttle lands several miles away as a beeping sound comes from the commander’s belt. Kemil heads to the rear of the ship and turns on the holo-transmitter. An image of Palpatine/Darth Sidious appears before him.
“Execute Order 66 commander.” Instructs Palpatine.
“Y-yes, my lord.” Replies Kemil.
The hologram disappears and Kemil picks up his gun, and then looks at the still passed out Jedi. He takes aim, but pauses.
“For the first time in my life, I am disobeying an order, fighting my training. I cannot kill her, for I fear I have fallen in love. I don't know, maybe I'm malfunctioning.” Conflicts Kemil. “If I return to the GAR, I will be executed for treason.”
Faya starts to wake up. Upon opening her eyes, she sees Kemil holding his blaster in her direction.
“Wh--what is the meaning of this?” Asks Faya with a confused look.
“I’ve been ordered to kill you. Palpatine has issued Order 66” Returns the clone with a sad voice.
“Why haven’t you pulled the trigger?” Questions Faya.
"I can't." Returned Kemil
"Why?" Asked the young Jedi
"Because ...I love you." Stated Kemil.
Faya blushes at this comment.
“What will we do?” Asks Faya.
“We can’t return. We’d both be killed if we would do so. I suggest we go into hiding on an uncharted world.” Returned the clone.
The shuttle takes off after an hour and disappears into hyperspace. Faya and Kemil are off to start their new life together.
