YVc-360 Light Courier
As the Empire made it harder and harder for legitimate merchants to arm their freighters it became harder and harder for people to move cargo from one area to another. Either merchants had to pay mercenaries to guard their transports or pay huge bribes to Imperial officials to secure escorts for convoys. Either way it was becoming more and more expensive to ship cargo across the galaxy. There was a desperate need for a ship that could move cargo safely. Many merchants looked to the Corellian Engineering Corporation for an answer.
The Corellian Engineering Corporation had a long-standing tradition of designing ships that while not overly powerful, could be easily modified and upgraded. However the Corporation was taking a lot of heat over its controversial YV-929 Armed Freighter. The Imperial Design Board was furious when they learned that over half of the YV-929’s produced were in the service of the rebellion. Never the less the corporation heard the cries of the merchants and went to work designing what would be the last of the YV series.
The YVc-360 Courier was and interesting ship. The ship is little more than a severely stripped down YV-330 light freighter. It has the traditional YV two deck bridge section, but almost all of the original conveniences were stripped out in favor of cargo space. The ships accommodations were scaled back just enough to house the two-person crew and two passengers in double bunks with one refresher. The 330’s standard enhanced sensor package was removed and the engines were removed from the rear pylon and attached directly to the hull. All but two of the ship's weapons were removed leaving the standard chin autoblaster and one dorsal turret. (standard models come with a blaster cannon but it can be switched to any space transport weapon. For purposes of modification the turret can hold eight emplacement points of weapons.) All of these modifications helped cut the ships length down to twenty meters, which made it barely qualify as a space transport. The loss of mass gave the ship its main defensive feature, speed.
The Idea was to make a ship so fast that if it ever encountered a threat it could simply run like hell. The 360 is faster than all but the most advanced starfighters and even sports a 1x hyperdrive making it faster than most ships in hyperspace. However, all this speed comes at a high price. The ship only has two light armaments so if it can’t outrun a threat it doesn’t really have the firepower to defend itself. Also the ship is structurally weaker than the average light freighter and only able to carry half as much cargo.
The YVc-360 was a mild success for the company. Legitimate customers loved the ship because it allowed them to avoid danger as well as deliver their shipments early. Most illegitimate business scoffed at the lack of weapons and ability to upgrade. However the YVc-360’s success ended almost entirely with the unveiling of the new YZ series. Still there remains a loyal following for the YVc-360. Also the company used many of the lessons it learned from the YVc-360 when it began designing the VCX-700 Heavy Courier.
