Designed by a team of Incom Research & Development designers shortly after Grand Admiral Thrawn's defeat at the Battle of Sluis Van, the Z-98 Phantom starfighter was developed in response to the Empire's use of cloaking technology. The Phantom prototype, after completing its performance tests, was offered as a gift to Luke Skywalker in recognition for his contributions to galactic peace and his endorsement of the X-Wing. After a few flights, Luke passed the fighter on to one of his students at the time.
Designed with the success of the Z-95 Headhunter and the T-65 X-Wing in mind, the Z-98 continues the legacy of its predecessors by incorporating the basic body design of the Z-95 and many of the systems from the T-65. In fact, the Z-98 scored very closely to the T-65 in performance tests run by Incom shortly after building the Phantom prototype.
The one feature that sets the Z-98 apart from the rest is the presence of newly-developed cloaking technology. Innovative in design, the Light Absorption Hull polarizes the ship in such a way where sensor rays, detection beams and even light is not reflected off the ship and rendering the starfighter virtually invisible to sensors and the naked eye. If anyone attempts to use sensors to find the ship while "cloaked" or tries to visually locate the ship, add +8 to the DC for the Computer Use, Search and/or Spot checks. Activating the light absorption system requires a move action by the ship's pilot. Shields cannot be active while the absorption system is active. Due to the system's delicate nature, the DC modifier drops by 1 for every 10 points of damage the ship's hull has sustained. In addition, all maintenance costs are multiplied by 10 and repair times are 3 times longer unless the ship is repaired at an Incom-authorized repair shop.
