The grappler type of droideka was designed for the subjugation of Naboo specifically. Expecting resistance, the Trade Federation had a select few droidekas outfitted with grappler claws in the place of their heavy blasters. They knew that prisoners would be more valuable than corpses, especially if their blockade would be taken as a legal objection by the Senate, and had these designed as a seek-and-capture droid. The droideka would use its shields to get in close to dangerous opponents and then grapple with them, subduing them quickly and efficiently while other battle droids secured the captives with binders. The grappler droids were mildly successful until the Jedi arrived, depleting their numbers significantly.
